The Role of Industry
Leading the way: Industry’s role in trades training
In British Columbia, the Industry Training Authority leads the way in improving training in key sectors through Industry Training Organizations (ITOs), of which RCITO is one. ITOs are not-for-profit organizations with responsibility for designated industry training programs. They are established by industry and co-funded by the Industry Training Authority under an annual Enterprise Partnership Agreement to provide specific services in key areas.
The scope of activities varies among ITOs, although they all share core responsibilities for forecasting apprenticeship needs and maintaining program standards. Some take a more active role in recruiting trainees, or in matching apprentices with prospective employers, while some leave the responsibility in the hands of apprentices and their employers. There is a consistent emphasis on ensuring the relevance and quality of training programs for their respective sectors.
